Sing or Listen

Studies have shown that music stimulates the brain, engages the ‘whole brain,’ whether they have Alzheimer’s disease or not.

The McMaster Optimal Aging Portal blog, in a page about “The sound of music…” reports:

“Researchers have identified that music positively influences peoples lives by reducing agitation and improving their cognitive abilities and wellbeing.”

“Older adults with dementia respond positively to music. Music can promote well-being and a sense of control, reduce anxiety, improve memory, and build social connections. Music can support caregivers taking care of their loved ones at home, while promoting their own mental and psychological health.”

Seniors may forget many memories, but music has been known to reawaken their memories, or at least to make seniors more alert.
